Notice the signs
Observe
Inventory every connected system, existing protection, test tag, bypass, drain, pressure condition, winterization step, and modification since the last review. Photograph labels without changing valve positions.
Cross connection
A hose, irrigation system, boiler feed, treatment unit, dock or landscape connection, and process equipment can create different backflow questions. Device selection depends on the actual hazard and approval path.
Note 17
Notice the signs
Inventory every connected system, existing protection, test tag, bypass, drain, pressure condition, winterization step, and modification since the last review. Photograph labels without changing valve positions.
Protect the room
Do not remove, bypass, cap incorrectly, or substitute a backflow assembly to restore flow. A failed or leaking device may protect a critical boundary even when the symptom appears inconvenient.
Material note
Cohasset's May 2026 rules address cross connections and department oversight. Ask the verified water provider and local plumbing authority which device, installer, registration, test, and record apply to the exact connection.
Service flow
The work order should identify the hazard class, approved assembly, orientation, drainage, clearance, isolation, permit, tester, initial result, corrective work, certification, and future access for maintenance.
Close the loop
File the test result and device details where they can be found at the next inspection. Restore every valve to the approved operating position and confirm that drainage does not create a separate building problem.
